iWave Data FAQs

How do fundraisers use data?

Successful nonprofits use data to inform all levels of giving and maximize donations. Data can often be grouped into 3 categories, wealth, philanthropic and biographic.

  • Biographical data provides basic characteristics about a prospect that can be used to contact and build a relationship with the individual
  • Wealth data provides insight into a prospect’s capacity to give and helps determine future gift asks
  • Philanthropic data provides a detailed look into a prospect’s past giving behavior, indicating where and how much they are likely to donate

What is the difference between iWave data and a donor database?

A donor database or donor management system (DMS) is a system that collects internal information that is used to manage relationships with existing donors, prospects, ticket buyers, and other supporters.

Alternatively, iWave is a prospect research and wealth screening solution that aggregates publicly available data that is not accessible within a donor database. iWave data includes billions of philanthropic, biographic, and wealth records such as real estate holdings, insider filings, and employment information to provide you a 360° view of a prospect’s capacity, propensity, and affinity to give to your cause. Using over 40 premium data sources and AI-driven analytics, iWave also delivers actionable insights that are tailored to your organization.

How do I clean my donor database?

Cleaning up your data not only yields better screening results but also helps with overall donor relations and reporting. Here are three different tactics that you can use to clean your donor database:

  • Run a data audit and focus on duplicate records missing or illogical address elements, donors over 100 years old, phone numbers of less than 10 digits, or a zipcode that is not 5 or 9 digits
  • Append your data using an external appends service
  • Cleanse and verify your data, focusing on high-value donors on your list

You can also use iWave’s Smart Alerts to automatically update your donor profiles with the latest fundraising intelligence.

To learn more about how you can keep your donor database clean, see our blog post, Clean Data, Clean Results: Data Hygiene For Screening Success.
