Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada

The London-based Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada has received one of its largest donations from an unlikely source. It wasn't a corporate donor or high-profile philanthropist who gave $400,000 to establish a research fellowship, but the late Bill Nash, a quiet, hard-working Oxford County farmer who battled a tumour for years until his death in 2007.The William Donald Nash Brain Tumour Research Fellowship, announced at a University Hospital ceremony yesterday, is aimed at young doctors or PhDs who have recently completed their studies and want to focus on brain-tumour research. Open to applicants across Canada, it will be awarded every two years for the next decade, with the recipients getting $100,000 over two years to cover their salary while they work in an established lab.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society has received $8.5-million from an anonymous donor to support a five-year research program to investigate a genetic disorder that increases the risk of developing cancer, particularly thyroid cancer. The gift will establish a consortium of scientists with the aim of improving thyroid-cancer screening, monitoring, and diagnosis.

$37.5 million pledge over five years from Linda Campbell, Gaye Farncombe and Susan Grange to Princess Margaret Hospital in Ontario. The gift will be recognized through the creation of the Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital and will support the hiring of high-profile researchers from abroad, the upgrade of the tumor bank and molecular analysis systems, and expansion of research into tumors and other areas.

At nearly 94 years of age and the Lighthouse's longest continuous donor, Corwith “Corky” Hamill has committed to a $100,000 challenge towards the Bold Visions Campaign! The Hamill Challenge requires the Lighthouse to raise $100,000 from donors and friends between August 1 and December 31, 2007. Once the Lighthouse reaches the goal, Corky will contribute an additional $100,000 to the Bold Visions Campaign. His donation will help the Lighthouse's proposed building renovations and campaign goals become a reality.

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held at Texas Children's Hospital for the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute just 8 weeks after the couple gave a record $50 million to help launch the world's preeminent collaborative institute to study and treat pediatric neurological disorders. Stanford Financial Group Chairman and CEO Sir Allen Stanford and World Golf Hall of Fame member Vijay Singh joined Tony Thomas from St. Jude and Laurie Tucker, Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing with FedEx, to present a check for $1.76 million from the inaugural Stanford St. Jude Championship. The donation from the 2007 event held this past June is the largest contribution in the 34 years that St. Jude has been the exclusive benefiting charity for the Memphis PGA TOUR event.

St. Michael's Hospital proudly announced a $20 million contribution Monday toward its trailblazing medical research and education facility that will bring novel treatments to patients and help save lives around the world. The funds, $15 million from the federal government and $5 million from private donors Arthur and Sonia Labatt, will support the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's Hospital, composed of the Keenan Research Centre and the Li Ka Shing International Centre in Health Care Education. Slated to open in 2010, the new facility will focus on developing novel therapies and better ways to bring best practices and research discoveries to patient bedsides faster than ever before.

The St. Vincent Health System Foundation has announced a gift of $1 million from the Tenenbaum Foundation of Little Rock. The gift has been used to purchase the da Vinci Surgical System at the St. Vincent Urology Center of Excellence at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center. The da Vinci is the first acquisition of robotics to become part of the Tenenbaum Robotics Suite, which will be located in the Urology Center.

That's been the mantra of Safe Kids East Central, led by the MCG Children's Medical Center, since its inception. And now, thanks to a $95,000 grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Safe Kids East Central can do that better than ever. The grant will be used to provide an injury prevention program to local schools. Known as Risk Watch, the school-based program helps teach children about eight risk areas: motor vehicles, drowning, fire/burns, falls, poisoning, guns, pedestrian/bike and strangulation/suffocation.

The Los Angeles Free Clinic has received the largest gift in its 40-year history, a $3 million from the Annenberg Foundation for a new Children & Family Health Center. The Annenberg Foundation's funding is the lead gift in the Clinic's 40th Anniversary Campaign, which has raised a record-breaking $17 million, exceeding its original goal by $2 million.

Key Town of Markham and Markham Stouffville Hospital Figures and one very important guest - Mr. Carman Lewis - celebrated a $250,000 donation toward the Hospital redevelopment on behalf of Mr. Lewis with a reception at the Hospital on June 9. The Hospital recognized the gift with a naming opportunity in its Urgent Care Area, through which Mr. Lewis chose to honor his late wife, Margaret. The area is now called the Urgent Care Area, generously supported by Margaret and Carman Lewis.
